A shadowed, resinous breath rises from thick red earth, brief and unmistakable. The windswept fog carries it forward toward something approaching. Bright poppies flare where the ground has been opened by war, appearing almost like signals. Beauty arrives exactly where it should not, as if summoned by disturbance and pain. The air is held in sharp suspension, like the moment before thunder decides to break, when history practices its return just beyond the horizon. Perhaps as a warning. Yet, around us, the fragile pulse of life remains — isolated red blooms standing in the haze.

Inspiration

The soil here is red... thick with clay, iron, and something else now. It sticks to my boots like guilt, and the air still tastes singed from the night’s sudden white flashes — that bitter, metallic sweetness that hangs after the sky is torn open and then pretends nothing happened... There were six of them this morning when I arrived, young and unshaven, one with a wedding band still clenched between two blood-blackened fingers. They’d been brought in before sunrise, still warm from the night’s ambush near the treeline, if not from life then from the steam of their opened insides. I didn’t ask their names, mostly because the lazaret station doesn't ask for them anymore. It’s easier to work on what’s left when you don’t think about what was there.

In the old world, we learned to measure a man’s worth by his future. Now I measure by blood pressure and whether I can find a pulse. One of them, maybe seventeen, had a poppy tucked into his front pocket. Bright red, impossibly clean. A mistake. The others had trampled flowers ground into the wool of their jackets, crushed petals smeared across cheeks like some pagan war paint. It looked like a boy had knelt in a meadow and then was flung across it like trash. I remember reading once that poppies grow after great trauma to the soil. The irony is brutal—beauty follows destruction as if summoned by it.

Outside, the crows have grown bold. They line the roof of what used to be a courthouse—a white-columned relic with God etched in stone above the entrance and burn marks beneath it. They hold the silence in place like sentries... Only yesterday, someone shot a medic, and not by accident. We don’t wear red crosses anymore as it’s an invitation, so I’ve taken to drawing one on the inside of my collar, like a confession. We were taught to stay neutral. But the earth doesn’t. It takes both sides equally and doesn’t bother to separate the bones.

Somewhere in the east, they say the Blue Army’s been seen again, what’s left of it, still wearing armbands, marching like ghosts toward a border that no longer exists. Now I don’t know if they’re ours or not anymore. I don’t think it matters. The crows never ask which flag you died under.

There are moments when I still believe in something. In the way hands reach out in pain, even if they no longer believe they’ll be held. In the tremble of a breath, trying not to be its last. In the bright red bloom of a single poppy on an otherwise dead field still fogged with gunsmoke. So, I press the petals flat in my field journal—between the pages where, long ago, I wrote down a hymn my grandmother sang, the kind you only hear at dusk when the world holds its breath. Not to remember who died, but that they once lived. And maybe that’s all that’s left of us now—these fragile, useless but beautiful testaments that we were ever here at all.
